Meltblown Filter Cartridge Technical Details and Specifications

Meltblown Cartridge Filter Construction and Working Principle

Gopani’s RO Protect meltblown filter cartridges are manufactured using a proprietary melt-blowing process where virgin polypropylene resin is extruded through precision die nozzles and attenuated by high-velocity hot air to produce ultra-fine microfibers. These fibers are collected on a rotating mandrel and thermally bonded to create a self-supporting, binderless depth filter element.

Unlike conventional uniform-density cartridges, Gopani’s meltblown cartridges feature a true graded-density structure. The outer layers are engineered with a more open fiber arrangement to capture larger particles, while the fiber density progressively increases toward the inner core for fine particle retention. This multi-zone architecture delivers 2 to 3 times the dirt holding capacity of standard PP spun filter cartridges, resulting in longer service intervals and lower total cost of ownership.

Engineered using premium-grade polypropylene

Gopani has the widest range of melt blown cartridge filters designed to solve a wide array of filtration problems. All the filters are thermally moulded and developed using cutting edge fiber technology to deliver high performance and long service life.

Difference between a regular spun cartridge filters and Gopani’s pp melt blown cartridge filters

The regular melt blown cartridge filters may experience media migration. If not prewashed they can also cause foaming issues. Gopani’s cartridge filters are pre-washed, and they are thermally moulded and developed using cutting edge fiber technology. The layered gradient structure not only imparts higher filtration capabilities and thermal stability but also last remarkably longer compared to the regular run of the mill products. All materials used to construct the cartridge filters are FDA compliant and we have different variants that work well for corrosive liquids, chemicals, some acids and alkaline liquids.

How to Select the Right Meltblown Cartridge Filter

Follow these 5 steps to choose the optimal RO Protect meltblown cartridge for your filtration application

1. Identify Your Particle Size Target

Determine the particle size you need to remove from your process fluid. This defines the micron rating needed. For RO membrane pre-filtration, 5 micron is standard. For pharmaceutical water, 0.5 or 1 micron may be required. For general industrial pre-filtration, 10 to 25 micron is typical. If unsure, Gopani can perform a filtration analysis of your process fluid sample.

2. Evaluate Operating Conditions

Assess your process fluid temperature, chemical composition, and pH level. Polypropylene meltblown cartridges operate up to 60 to 80 degrees C depending on the variant. For temperatures above 80 degrees C, consider alternative media. For aggressive chemicals, verify PP compatibility. The RO Protect Eco and Extreme variants handle up to 80 degrees C; the Eco Plus is rated to 60 degrees C.

3. Determine Flow Rate and Housing Configuration

Calculate the required flow rate to select the correct cartridge length and quantity. Standard lengths are 10, 20, 30, and 40 inches. Higher flow rates require longer cartridges or multi-cartridge housings. A general guideline for meltblown cartridges is 3 to 5 GPM per 10-inch element for water applications. Gopani's filtration engineers can help size your system for optimal performance.

4. Select the Right End Fitting

Match the end fitting configuration to your filter housing. Common options include DOE (Double Open End) for standard housings, 222 flat or fin for Code 7 connections, and 226 flat or fin for bayonet-style housings. The RO Protect Ultra uses DOE fittings, while the Eco Plus and Extreme variants offer up to 7 different end fitting options for maximum housing compatibility.

5. Choose Your Product Variant

Based on the above factors, select from Gopani's 5 meltblown cartridge variants: Ultra (best value, widest micron range), Eco (cost-effective DOE solution up to 80 degrees C), Eco Plus (2X dirt capacity with 7 end fittings), Prime (premium performance), or Extreme (FDA-grade, 0.5 micron, weld-free for pharma and food applications). FAQs

What is a meltblown filter cartridge?
A meltblown filter cartridge is a depth filter made from polypropylene (PP) resin that is extruded through fine nozzles and drawn by high-velocity hot air to create microfibers. These fibers are thermally bonded (not chemically bonded) to form a self-supporting cartridge with no binders, adhesives, or surfactants. The result is a true depth filtration element with a graded-density structure that captures particles throughout its entire cross-section, providing higher dirt holding capacity than surface filters.
Meltblown cartridge filters are depth filters that capture particles throughout the entire filter wall thickness using a graded-density PP fiber matrix, while pleated cartridge filters are surface filters that capture particles on the outer membrane surface. Meltblown cartridges offer higher dirt holding capacity at lower cost and are ideal for pre-filtration and general process filtration. Pleated cartridges provide absolute micron ratings with sharper cutoffs and are used for critical final filtration. Many systems use meltblown cartridges as pre-filters to protect downstream pleated elements.
Gopani RO Protect meltblown filter cartridges are available in micron ratings ranging from 0.5 micron to 25 micron. Standard ratings include 0.5, 1, 5, 10, and 25 micron depending on the product variant. The RO Protect Ultra offers the widest range (1 to 25 micron), while the RO Protect Extreme provides the finest filtration at 0.5 micron. Each rating is designed for specific applications, from coarse pre-filtration to fine particle removal in process-critical systems.
PP spun (meltblown polypropylene) filter cartridges are used across a wide range of industries including water treatment and RO pre-filtration, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, food and beverage processing, chemicals and petrochemicals, electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, and power generation. They are especially valued in applications where chemical compatibility, thermal stability, and absence of binders or surfactants are critical requirements.
Selecting the right meltblown cartridge filter depends on four key factors: (1) Particle size to be removed, which determines the micron rating; (2) Operating temperature and chemical compatibility of the process fluid; (3) Required flow rate, which determines cartridge length and quantity; and (4) End fitting configuration to match your filter housing. Gopani offers 5 product variants (Ultra, Eco, Eco Plus, Prime, and Extreme) to match different application requirements. Contact Gopani's filtration engineers for application-specific recommendations.
Graded-density filtration is an advanced meltblown construction technique where the fiber density varies from the outer surface to the inner core. The outer layers have a more open structure to capture larger particles, while the inner layers progressively become denser to trap finer particles. This creates multiple filtration zones within a single cartridge, resulting in significantly higher dirt holding capacity and longer service life compared to uniform-density meltblown cartridges. All Gopani RO Protect meltblown cartridges feature true graded-density construction.
Yes, select Gopani RO Protect meltblown filter cartridges are manufactured from FDA-compliant polypropylene materials conforming to 21 CFR 177. The RO Protect Extreme variant is specifically designed for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications with FDA-grade materials and weld-free construction that eliminates any risk of contamination from adhesives or bonding agents. All cartridges are manufactured in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility.
The maximum operating temperature for Gopani RO Protect meltblown cartridge filters varies by product variant. The RO Protect Eco and RO Protect Extreme support continuous operation up to 80 degrees C, while the RO Protect Eco Plus is rated for up to 60 degrees C.
