How to Select the Right Filter Bag for Your Application

Five parameters determine the correct ClaryFil™ bag for your process. Work through each in order – get them all right and your bag will perform at rated capacity for its full service life.

1. Micron Rating – Depth vs. Surface Filtration

ClaryFil™ PP and PE felt bags use depth filtration – particles are captured throughout the media thickness, giving a high dirt-holding capacity. Typical micron ratings: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 µm. ClaryFil™ NMO monofilament uses surface filtration – particles are retained on the outside of the mesh and can be rinsed off, making these bags cleanable and reusable. Typical ratings: 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 µm.

2. Chemical Compatibility – Match Media to Your Process Fluid

Polypropylene resists acids, alkalis, and most aqueous solutions – making ClaryFil™ PP the default for general chemical and water treatment duties. Polyester handles hot solvents and mildly acidic environments – making ClaryFil™ PE the choice for inks, paints, resins, and elevated-temperature process liquids. Nylon mesh resists a broad range of solvents and is food-contact approved – making ClaryFil™ NMO the standard for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical streams.

3. Operating Temperature – PP Collar vs. SS Ring

ClaryFil™ bags fitted with a polypropylene collar are rated to 80°C. ClaryFil™ PE and NMO bags fitted with a stainless steel 316 ring are rated to 130°C. For process temperatures between 80°C and 130°C, specify a PE or NMO bag with an SS ring.

4. Bag Size – Match to Your Housing and Flow Rate

ClaryFil™ bags are manufactured in four standard sizes, matching the global standard for bag filter housings:

Size Dimensions (Dia × Length) Max Flow Rate Typical Housing
#1 7″ × 16″ (178 × 406 mm) 18 m³/hr Single-bag housings, small to mid-flow
#2 7″ × 32″ (178 × 813 mm) 34 m³/hr Standard single-bag housing, most common size
#3 4″ × 8″ (102 × 203 mm) 6 m³/hr Compact/mini housings, lab and pilot-scale
#4 4″ × 14″ (102 × 356 mm) 12 m³/hr Mid-size compact housing, skid-mounted systems

For non-standard sizes (#5, #6, #2X, #7) or multi-bag housings, see our Custom Filter Bags page.

5. Construction – Welded Seam vs. Stitched, Collar Material

All ClaryFil™ PP and PE felt bags use fully welded construction – no stitching, no fibre migration, no bypass leakage. This is critical in food, pharmaceutical, and precision-coating applications. Collar options: polypropylene (standard, to 80°C) or stainless steel 316 (sanitary and high-temperature, to 130°C).

Bag Filters vs Cartridge Filters — Which Do You Need?

One of the most common questions from first-time buyers is whether to use bag filters or cartridge filters. The answer depends on your flow rate, dirt load, micron requirement, and housing investment. Here is a head-to-head comparison to help you decide.

Parameter Bag Filters Cartridge Filters
Filtration Type Depth (felt) or surface (mesh) Depth (meltblown/wound) or surface (pleated)
Micron Range 1–300 µm (felt: 1–200; NMO: 50–300) 0.5–150 µm depending on type
Flow Rate per Element Up to 34 m³/hr (Size #2 bag) Up to 4.8 m³/hr (40” cartridge)
Dirt Holding Capacity High — larger media area Moderate to high — varies by type
Reusability NMO mesh bags: yes. Felt bags: single use Generally single use (except sintered metal)
Cost per Changeout Lower — bags are less expensive Higher per element — but finer filtration
Housing Cost Lower — simpler design Higher — multi-cartridge housings
Best For High-flow, high-dirt, coarse to medium filtration Fine filtration, tight micron control, RO pre-treatment

FAQs

What is a liquid filter bag and how does it work?
A liquid filter bag is a permeable textile bag installed inside a bag filter housing. Process liquid is pumped into the housing and forced through the bag, which captures suspended particles either within the bag fibres (depth filtration — felt bags) or on the bag surface (surface filtration — nylon mesh bags). Clean filtered liquid exits through the housing outlet. Filter bags are the most economical choice for high-flow, high-contamination liquid filtration.
ClaryFil™ PP and PE felt bags are available in 9 standard ratings: 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 200 micron (µm). ClaryFil™ NMO nylon mesh bags are available in 7 standard ratings: 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 micron. Additional ratings can be manufactured on request. Contact Gopani for application-specific guidance on selecting the correct micron rating.
ClaryFil™ PP felt bags and any bag with the universal polypropylene collar are rated to a maximum of 80°C. ClaryFil™ PE (polyester) felt bags and Nylon NMO mesh bags used with a stainless steel 316 or zinc-coated steel ring collar are rated to a maximum of 130°C. Never exceed the rated temperature — doing so will damage the bag and may compromise filtration integrity.
ClaryFil™ bags are produced in four standard industry sizes: Size #1 (7” diameter × 16” long, max 18 m³/hr), Size #2 (7” × 32”, max 34 m³/hr), Size #3 (4” × 8”, max 6 m³/hr), and Size #4 (4” × 14”, max 12 m³/hr). Additional sizes including 4”×10”, 4”×20”, 4”×24” and 7”×36” are available. Custom dimensions are also produced on request.
All ClaryFil™ filter bags are available with three collar options: Universal polypropylene (PP) collar (rated to 80°C, fits most standard housings), Stainless steel 316 ring (rated to 130°C, required for high-temperature and sanitary applications), and Zinc-coated steel ring (economy option for moderate temperatures). The collar must match your housing flange for a proper seal.
Felt bags (ClaryFil™ PP and PE) use depth filtration — particles are captured throughout the media thickness, giving high dirt-holding capacity. They are single-use and available from 1 to 200 µm. Nylon mesh bags (ClaryFil™ NMO) use surface filtration — particles are retained on the outside of the woven mesh. NMO bags can be cleaned and reused multiple times, available from 50 to 300 µm. Choose felt for fine filtration and high dirt loads; choose NMO for reusability and surface filtration.
ClaryFil™ NMO nylon monofilament mesh bags are cleanable and reusable — the woven mesh can be backwashed or ultrasonically cleaned to restore flow. PP and PE felt bags are designed for single-use service. While felt bags can sometimes be partially cleaned, Gopani recommends single-use operation to maintain consistent filtration efficiency and avoid cross-contamination between batches.
Yes. Gopani is a complete bag filter system supplier. Our Clary-T BF (stainless steel 304/316) housings, Plastofilt BF (polypropylene) housings, and Polyfilt BF (uPVC) housings are all designed to accept ClaryFil™ bags in sizes #1 through #4. Procuring bags and housings from a single source eliminates sizing mismatches and simplifies maintenance. Contact our team for a complete system quote.
For most acid, alkali, and aqueous chemical streams, ClaryFil™ PP (polypropylene felt) is the recommended choice due to its broad chemical resistance. For hot solvents, resins, and elevated-temperature chemical processes, ClaryFil™ PE (polyester felt) with a stainless steel ring collar handles up to 130°C. For oily wastewater and hydrocarbon-contaminated streams, use ClaryFil™ Oil Adsorbing bags. Contact Gopani’s filtration engineers with your specific fluid chemistry for a recommendation.
Yes. Gopani exports ClaryFil™ filter bags and complete bag filter systems to the USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Europe.
