Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants are meant for turning wastewater into an effluent which can be released back to the environment. They remove or reduce the chemical and biological pollutants from the wastewater so as to make the fluid safe for discharge. These plants have to deal with a wide array of organic and inorganic chemical compounds. Of all the processes, it has been found, adsorption by activated carbon tackles the broadest range of contaminants. Activated carbon helps in the process by adsorbing hydrophobic and high molecular weight compounds which industrial wastewaters are riddled with. This leads to a huge reduction in COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand).

Municipal Wastewater Treatment

Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants have to tackle the sewage generated in the living and commercial spaces. Activated Carbon is used in sewage treatment when the secondary effluent possesses non-biodegradable compounds. These compounds can prove to be lethal for the aquatic life. In such situations GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) is used as a polishing step.

In some installations, they have replaced traditional activated sludge process with PACT (Powdered Activated Carbon Treatment). In this treatment powdered activated carbon is added to aerobic or anaerobic system which results in easier sludge removal.

Activated Carbon For Wastewater Treatment

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) for Wastewater Treatment

When treating the wastewater with this type, the liquid is made to percolate through a bed of granular activated carbon. Generally the filters (also called contactors) made for using this type of activated carbon are fixed-bed with downflow column – either a steel column or a steel or concrete rectangular tank. Contaminants are adsorbed as the liquid feeded from the top gravitates. Lately new style contactors have come up: expanded bed and moving bed. Regenerability is one of the most significant features of granular activated carbon. The handling is simple and operational costs are lower with this type.

Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) for Wastewater Treatment

Powdered Activated Carbon is dosed into the stream or in the holding basin either as a dry powder or as an aqueous solution. After the completion of the process, it has to be removed from the effluent. The existing tanks can be utilized for this treatment. Unlike the granular type, the powdered activated carbon cannot be regenerated and has to be disposed to a landfill or an incinerator.
